SAN GABRIEL -- Jonathan Garrick of St. Francis and Nicolo Galletti of Foothill High-Pleasanton each finished in the top five at the California Interscholastic Federation Boys Golf Championships on Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club.

Austin Smotherman of Del Oro-Loomis was medalist, shooting a 4-under 67 to beat Beau Hossler Jr. of Santa Margarita-Rancho Santa Margarita by one stroke.

Galletti and Andrew Levitt of Santa Margarita each shot a 69 and tied for third. Garrick shot a 70 and finished alone in fifth.

A junior left-hander, Galletti led Foothill to a runner-up team finish as the Falcons had a five-player score of 21-over 376, two shots back of champion Granite Bay.

At the state championship last season, Foothill placed third as a team, and Galletti took second overall.

Foothill had five players break 80, including Roshan Chekuri (74), Brett Thawley (77) and Tanner Hughes (77).

Galletti, who has orally committed to Arizona State, moved into title contention with a birdie on the par-4 15th hole, improving to 3 under. But his momentum stalled with a bogey on 16.

Garrick surged to 2 under with a birdie on No. 16, but he bogeyed the 18th.

Garrick -- who is headed to UCLA -- has been stellar throughout the postseason. Garrick, who finished second at the Central Coast Section championships, shot a 4-under 68 at the NorCal tournament but lost medalist honors in a three-player playoff.
