Junior Anmol Thiara helps poor break poverty cycle

For five years, junior Anmol Thiara’s heart has been in supporting low-income families through an organization called Sunday Friends. Recently, Anmol has dedicated his efforts to helping the group expand its services.
Sunday Friends is an organization that helps low-income families receive household necessities, like food and detergent, and teaches them life skills. Families can buy items in a store the organization runs, and Anmol helps set up the store, price items or organize activities for children.
The program has been expanded to serve more families, and Anmol has been busy getting the word out that Sunday Friends needs more volunteers and donations. To that end, he recently sent out 1,500 letters to community members, asking them to consider giving their time or items that could be sold in the store.
“I just love to be involved in my community,” he said.
Anmol is committed to volunteering because he has learned to empathize with the families and gotten to know them well. In addition, his work has been meaningful because he has found ways to apply the Holy Cross BRIC values and what he has learned in his religion classes to his weekly interactions with those he serves.
“The poor are not scary,” he said. “They are our brothers and sisters, and we need to talk to them. They always have a story.”
