Environmental Club plants vegetable garden

Posted December 3

Environmental Club members are doing their part to think globally and act locally. They have recently planted the first seeds in the club’s new vegetable garden, located behind the portables.

The idea to start and maintain a vegetable garden had been brewing with club members for a while, but when they finally found a plot of land suitable for gardening on campus, near the Cuesta Park annex, they seized on the idea. They set up an irrigation system in their planter boxes and with a layer of topsoil in, they planted their first batch of sweet peas.

“In acting locally, we wanted our school to be self-sufficient,” junior club co-president Daniel Lai said.

The students are starting small but hope to plant more seasonal vegetables later.

“Mrs. Chisam said this is a learning experience,” said sophomore co-president Karena Nguyen, who gardened for the first time. “So even if the outcome is not expected, we’ll still learn how to plant and garden. This is a great opportunity.”
