Band and Ensembles

Welcome to the Saint Francis band programs! The Music Department has a long tradition of excellence. For over fifty years there has been a thriving program at Saint Francis, and today we are stronger than ever!

Being in band is a fun and rewarding experience. Many students will testify that being a part of the band program will enhance your overall Saint Francis experience. It's an excellent way to get involved with the community and you will, without a doubt, have the opportunity to create friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

The music program at Saint Francis High School boasts four bands (Concert, Symphonic, Jazz and Marching) as well as a number of small group ensembles. Our bands and choirs achieve great success at local festivals, parades and have the privilege to go on tour every year. The band program has close to 100 students in it each year and continues to grow.

Saint Francis is dedicated to staying on top of current trends and is always looking for ways to encourage more students to get involved with music. We've added several classes to our department to meet the growing demand.

The music department at Saint Francis is open to anyone who wants to continue their musical training or discover new talents. If you are looking for a comprehensive music program where you can participate in a wide variety of ensembles and perform all over the world, the Saint Francis music program is the place for you!

Sincerely,
Javier Cerna
Saint Francis Band Director

Concert and Symphonic Bands

The Concert Band is comprised of students who are generally new to Saint Francis and wish to refine their skills on a particular instrument. It is also suitable for students who wish to re-enter the music program after a period of inactivity. It is primarily a "training" group, which focuses on the foundations of music making. This group performs at several events during the school year as well as the winter and spring concerts. This class is open to all students with fundamental knowledge of a particular instrument. A minimum of one year of experience is recommended to sign up for this band.

The Symphonic Band is the premier wind ensemble at Saint Francis High School. It consists of advanced musicians who wish to further improve their skills on a particular instrument through ensemble training. An increased knowledge of musical literature, genre, technique and performance is emphasized in this class. This group performs in several festivals and events during the school year and goes on "tour" every spring. Past tours have included San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, Australia, and most recently, Ireland in Summer 2015. Students who wish to enroll in this class may do so through audition only.

Marching Band

The Lancer Marching Band plays a vital role in nourishing Saint Francis spirit. It is the largest performance ensemble at Saint Francis High School and consists of all the members of the band program. The Marching Band performs at home football games (as well as some away games), basketball games, school rallies, and field show competitions. The Marching Band and includes a Drumline and Color Guard.

Students are expectedto participate in all Marching Band activities and practices unless excused by a physician. All Marching Band members are also required to attend Band Camp at the end of each summer.  The Marching Band rehearses during the Fall on Monday and Wednesday evenings, as well as some Saturday morning and afternoons.

Color Guard

The award-winning Saint Francis Lancer Color Guard is the auxiliary unit of the Lancer Marching Band. In the fall, the color guard performs with the band at football half-time performances and competes with the marching band in parade and field show reviews throughout Northern California.

All members are trained in dance, flag and rifle. The color guard begins training during Band Camp, a one-week training camp with the entire band that introduces members to fundamental technique and the beginnings of their show. It is here that they begin to get to know one another and bond as a team. Members learn pre-game pep routines, as well as choreography for their field show. It is a challenging and athletic, but exciting and rewarding experience. The color guard attends all scheduled Marching Band rehearsals, and is subject to additional scheduled rehearsals as needed.
Please feel free to contact Color Guard caption head Kelly Hartnett at kellychartnett@yahoo.com with any questions.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is an award-winning ensemble at Saint Francis High School. The Jazz ensemble is a group of advanced musicians who in addition to traditional musical training receive knowledge and training in "Jazz" styles through improvisation, music theory and performance. As an advanced musical ensemble, this group has high professional standards and is active in performing at many events. Students who enjoy Jazz and wish to enroll in this class may do so by audition only. Admittance is based on skill and instrumentation needs. A student must be enrolled in either Concert Band or Symphonic Band in order to audition to be a member of the Jazz Band. The Jazz Band rehearses 4 hours per week outside of the school day.

The pit orchestra is a small group of music students who play for the spring musical every year. This group is open to all students but priority is given to those enrolled in the music program. Instrumentation needs for the group will vary from year to year, depending on the chosen musical. Musical pit rehearsals usually begin in late February and run through spring break.
