Lancers welcome Holy Cross family

Lancers warmly welcomed their peers from sister Holy Cross schools this summer as students from five high schools converged on the Saint Francis campus to serve and learn together during the annual Holy Cross immersion.

Each school that participates in the weeklong Holy Cross immersion takes turns hosting each time, and this year, it was Paige Case ’18, Sophie Gutierrez ’18, Jason Park ’18, Tyler Roey ’19 and Monica Wahl ’18 who made their guests feel at home during their stay at Saint Francis. The visiting students came from Holy Cross of San Antonio, Holy Cross School (New Orleans), Notre Dame High School (Sherman Oaks) and Moreau Catholic High School (Hayward). Ms. Mitchell ’08, Mr. Pompei ’08 and Ms. Ruebusch also attended and represented Saint Francis.

The immersion allows participants to learn more about common Holy Cross values and offers service opportunities to the local area. All of the students’ work and time spent together focused on faith and Holy Cross traditions. The immersion week began with an evening Mass held at the bay tree, in which each participant deposited a bag of soil from his or her hometown into a planter holding a California fruit tree that the Campus Ministry office will nurture all year. Additionally, each day began with a Scripture passage, followed by a reflection by one of the students that set the tone for the day. Throughout the week, students volunteered at groups that offer transitional housing for women, children and disabled vets and assisted organizations that provide food for the hungry.

The Holy Cross immersion was a meaningful and transformational experience for all who participated.
