Armed with buckets and gloves, students from the Environmental Club and teacher Roberta Chisam’s biology class combed Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz County to pick up glass, plastic, bottle caps and cigarette butts. They picked up 100 pounds of trash as part of the statewide Coastal Cleanup Day.
The students’ efforts helped protect the wildlife and keep Davenport Beach safe for beachgoers. Cleaning the coastline before the winter rain arrives prevents garbage from moving up the food chain.
Environmental co-president senior McKenna Conners is proud the beach is cleaner now than when they arrived.
“It takes constant effort to keep the beach clean,” she said. “Everyone needs to work together. A single individual can’t do it all, but a large group of students can make a difference.”
