Lancers Give Message of Thanks to MVPD
Posted 11/30/2017 09:26AM

To thank the police officers who worked during Thanksgiving, Lancers donated homemade baked goods to the Mountain View Police Department.

Sophomores Alexia Thia and Zara Noor Shabeer recently formed a new club at Saint Francis, called Appreciating Women and Men in Service (AWMS), and they encouraged classmates who wanted to join the club’s efforts to donate or bake brownies, cookies, cupcakes and other goodies. Alexia and Zara packaged those treats into 57 individual bags to give to the police officers, who were thrilled to receive them.

“It was rewarding to say thank you,” Zara said.

The idea behind the club was Zara and Alexia’s summer volunteer work at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. Their responsibilities included escorting patients from one department to another and in spending time with them, they were drawn to the stories the veterans shared about their lives.

Feeling inspired by what they heard, Zara and Alexia wanted to celebrate veterans and have a channel through which they and their peers can show their appreciation for veterans and those in public safety careers. The club is moderated by Mr. Watts, a former police officer himself. Mr. Watts serves as the director of the Holy Cross Achievers program and teaches psychology.
