Renowned percussion ensemble performs
The percussion ensemble from Humboldt State University, currently on tour, performed at Saint Francis, and the group treated students to a multicultural experience, playing high-energy contemporary and world music.
The ensemble’s repertoire has a special focus on 20th century composers and world music, and their presentation reflected that. The group performed music of West Africa and Brazil and challenged students to experimental music. Music students attended this special presentation, and other Saint Francis students were invited as well.
Ms. Mitchell-Carter was excited that through the performance, the ensemble was able to introduce new musical styles and instruments to the audience. Humboldt is well known for its percussion ensemble, she said, and it was there, where she was a student, that she first heard a steel drum band play. That experience compelled her to start a steel drum band at Saint Francis.
“Humboldt is where I learned to love music, and it set a good foundation for me,” she said. “They taught me the heart of music. It ignited a fire in me.”
