Overview
Open to rising 8th – 12th graders from any school
We offer a variety of courses that mirror the Saint Francis college preparatory curriculum of the regular school year. As such, they are UC (a-g)/CSU and NCAA approved. The classes can be taken for advancement, remediation, or enrichment. All classes meet the graduation requirement in the subject area. Each semester course is taken in one Term and is worth 5 credits.

Course List
- Students must enroll in both semesters to receive a year's worth of credit. Semester 2 content builds off of Semester 1 material. Exposure to Semester 1 material is strongly recommended to prepare to take Semester 2.
- Saint Francis students are welcome to take any of our courses for enrichment purposes, but courses cannot be taken for credit with the exception Geometry or Trigonometry for advancement, or courses for grade remediation. Saint Francis students take on-campus courses in Geometry or Trigonometry for advancement ("jumping")
Mathematics
Algebra 1
The concepts needed for the further study of math are covered with the emphasis on problem solving. The student will develop the understanding of the real number system and perform the four basic operations on polynomial, rational and radical expressions. The concepts of simplifying and evaluating mathematical expressions, determining the solutions to equations and inequalities and the development of graphing are all used in the context of applications to real world situations. There will be constant emphasis on arithmetic skills and their applications.

Prepares students for: Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry, Geometry Honors
Note for rising 8th graders: 8th graders are not eligible for Algebra 1 credit at most Middle Schools and High Schools. For example, if the student is admitted to Saint Francis, Algebra will not be added to the student's official transcript, but taking this class may increase the student’s ability with Algebra sufficiently to enable him or her to place into Geometry upon taking the Saint Francis math placement exam in the spring of acceptance.
Geometry
Semesters 1 & 2
Using definitions, basic postulates and theorems, students will learn to solve problems involving triangles, other polygons, circles and solids. Other elements consist of areas of plane figures, areas and volumes of solids and the applications of coordinate geometry and basic trigonometry. The course includes a constant review of arithmetic and algebraic skills.

Algebra 2
Semesters 1 & 2
This course is a continuation of the material studied in Algebra I. There is a review and further development of the structure of the real number system, the solving of equations and inequalities, the manipulation of polynomial and fractional expressions and graphing. This is followed by the study of radicals, complex numbers, quadratics, functions, analytic geometry, exponents, logarithms, and sequences. We will also introduce basic combinatorics and probability.

Precalculus
This course includes the study of functions and graphs, polynomial and rational functions, exponents and logarithms, a review of trigonometry and its applications, polar coordinates, conics and inequalities.

Calculus
This course offers students the opportunity to explore the fundamental principles of Calculus at a pace that provides students time to understand, appreciate and apply these concepts ultimately preparing students for a first-year college Calculus course. After first reviewing some essential Pre-Calculus concepts, students will be introduced to Calculus through the study of limits. Then, students will learn differentiation techniques and applications using functional or graphical definitions. In the second semester, students will move on to integration, also discussing valuable graphical and functional techniques. At points in the course, students will also apply calculus to explore physics, economics, engineering, and other practical applications.

Science
Biology
Semesters 1 & 2
The basic concepts of biology are introduced: cell theory, genetics, evolution, the animal and plant kingdom, ecology and behavior. These topics are presented by means of lecture, class discussions, and selected laboratory experiments.

Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes it undergoes. Through this class, students will explore the atomic structure of matter, chemical composition and reactions, nomenclature, stoichiometry, modern atomic theory, energy in chemical reactions, chemical bonding, the states of matter, and acids, bases and solutions. Inquiry-based and laboratory activities will be an integral part of the coursework. Through their study of chemistry, students will become more scientifically and technologically literate in order to make better personal and societal decisions.

Physics
Semesters 1 & 2
Physics is an upper level science course that studies the interaction of matter and energy. This course will introduce concepts of physical interaction that can be solved using mathematical formulas and analytical problem solving. All students will work on their skills of observation, analysis, organization, and computation throughout the course. Topics covered include measurement and vector analysis, kinematics, fluids, conservation of momentum, thermodynamics, optics, waves, and electricity and magnetism.

Conceptual Physics
Semesters 1 & 2 *
Conceptual Physics is a laboratory-based introduction to the main principles of physics as seen in our daily lives. The content emphasizes the conceptual exploration of the topics of motion, forces, energy, properties of matter, thermodynamics, waves, electricity and magnetism. Students will utilize first-year algebra skills to problem solve and analyze data. Classroom learning will include hands-on laboratory work incorporating direct data collection and analysis, demonstrations, whole class discussion, and small-group projects.
*This summer course is designed for students who need to remediate for Conceptual Physics from during the school year.

SFHS Students Only
Trigonometry
Any Saint Francis High School Algebra 2 student who had a solid “A” for the first semester is invited to take a one-semester Trigonometry course this summer. In order to remain eligible for this program, students are required to maintain a solid “A” in Algebra 2 through the entire year. Invitations will be extended to eligible students by email after the 12-week grading period second semester. Second semester grades will be re-verified for eligibility at the end of the school year. Only students that finish both first and second semester with the letter mark “A” will be allowed to take this summer course. This course will not open until after the 12-week grading period has ended.
The course content is the same in sessions 1 & 2. Students may take the class in either session to advance, but the course is limited to 28 students per session.
Students will be informed by the Summer High School Principal via email at the 12-weeks of their eligibility for the course and next steps for enrollment.

Religious Studies
Our Religious Studies Department offers a hybrid online/independent study course to accommodate students who need to remediate a Religion class for credit. This course is only for Credit recovery of a D or an F. Students will meet online with a Saint Francis Religion instructor daily on Zoom from 1 - 1:30pm. Students are expected to be present for all synchronous class time via Zoom conference call.

Ethnic Studies
Our Ethnic Studies Department offers a hybrid online/independent study course to accommodate students who need to remediate an Ethnic Studies class for credit. This course is only for Credit recovery of a D or an F. Students will meet online with a Saint Francis Ethnic Studies instructor daily on Zoom from 1:35-2:05pm. Students are expected to be present for all synchronous class time via Zoom conference call.

Receiving Credit
Receiving Credit
Families who attend a high school other than Saint Francis should verify that the course through Summer at Saint Francis will be accepted for credit at their local high school. Most of our courses are UC/CSU (a-g) and NCAA approved*. Students may enroll in either our in-person or fully online programs for remediation. Please note that remediation is for D or F grades.
*NCAA doesn't approve of "Credit Recovery" courses in Edgenuity.
Transcripts - Credit versus Enrichment:
Choice of Credit or Enrichment needs to be selected no later than the 6th day of the course. Choices cannot be changed after the 7th day of the course. Students taking classes for credit should choose to have transcripts sent to their school and/or their home at the time of registration. You may choose two destinations for transcripts.
Transcripts are mailed on the last day of the Second High School Term. Transcripts are provided to students who are taking the course for credit. Transcripts are not provided for students who choose enrichment.
Courses for Credit
Students must enroll in both terms in order to receive a full year's worth of credit. Students who choose to get credit should sign up for "advancement" or "remediation" when they register. Students who choose to get credit will receive a transcript.
Courses for Enrichment
Students are encouraged to take courses from Summer at Saint Francis for enrichment purposes. This is a good option to preview a course in the upcoming school year or to explore new topics in the STEM or Liberal Arts field. No transcript is issued when a course is taken for enrichment.
Final Exam Requirement:
Final exams are given on the last day of each Term and may not be rescheduled to accommodate absences. Final exams are required for students seeking credit. Final exams are not required for students taking the course for enrichment.
Online Courses In Person Final Exam Requirement:
An in person proctored online exam at Saint Francis is required for all online courses for credit. No exceptions will be made for proctored exams away from Saint Francis High School aside from documented illness. Final exams are not required for students taking the course for enrichment.
Attendance Policy for Credit:
In order to receive credit for a course, a student may be absent no more than 1 day per semester class and must be present on the day of the final exam. A student who has to leave early or arrives late will be given a tardy. Two tardies will result in an absence. If a student is more than 30 minutes late or leaves more than 30 minutes early, they will be credited with an absence.
If a student is taking the course for enrichment, there is no attendance policy.
A note for Saint Francis Students:
While Saint Francis students are encouraged to take courses from Summer at Saint Francis for enrichment purposes, they will not receive credit for these courses with the exception of approved summer Geometry* or Trigonometry** advancement. See the "Information for Saint Francis Students" tab.

Transcripts
Students taking classes for credit should choose to have transcripts sent to Saint Francis High School at the time of registration. You may also choose to have a transcript sent home.
Tuition Assistance
Students who receive tuition assistance through Saint Francis High School during the school year will have that aid matched for any summer courses taken for credit or enrichment. When you are registering, add the items you wish to purchase to your cart and and go to make payment. You will be prompted to apply your tuition assistance at that time. Your order will be discounted 100% at the time of purchase and you will be charged for the remainder later.
Advancement
Only students who meet the Math Department's requirements are eligible to take coursework for the purposes of advancement. Currently we offer Geometry to advance to Algebra 2 and Trigonometry to qualify for AP Precalculus.
Remediation
More information about Saint Francis student options for remediating is available in the Master Grade Remediation Guidelines. Students who are taking a course for remediation will get credit for the course if they achieve a C- or above. Please note that remediation is for D or F grades from the school year.
Courses for Credit
Registration for Geometry and Trig opens after Easter Break. Eligible students and their guardians will be notified via Havalo email about the course opening for enrollment. Ample sections are set aside for SFHS students.
Geometry students must enroll in both terms in order to receive a full year's worth of credit. Trigonometry is a one semester course and students need only enroll in a single term.
Transcripts
Saint Francis High School transcripts will only list the following classes from Summer at Saint Francis: for remediation (all classes offered), for credit/advancement (Geometry and Trigonometry). If a course other than Geometry or Trigonometry is taken outside of Summer at Saint Francis for credit, it will not be placed on the Saint Francis transcript.
Courses for Enrichment
Saint Francis students may take courses from Summer at Saint Francis for enrichment purposes. These courses will not receive credit with the exception of the approved remediation or advancement options outlined on this page. Transcripts are not issued when a course is taken for enrichment.
Rising 9th grade Lancers
We encourage incoming 9th Grade SFHS students to register for "Lancers Rising". Any enrollment in a Saint Francis High School course for rising 9th Grade SFHS students needs to be approved by the Summer High School Principal and is rarely granted.
