Lancer Saints in the City

Several Lancers were recently recognized as “young disciples in the Diocese of San Jose.” In addition to senior Marissa Del Rio, nominated by Saint Francis, Frida Ortiz, Rachel Perez, Ava Downey and Leanne Alvarado were also honored at the same Saints in the City banquet for their volunteer work at their parishes.

Senior Leanne Alvarado has served at St. Victor in many roles, including as an altar server and usher. During COVID, she has volunteered at the St. Victor’s Food Pantry, serving more than 300 families every week and, while she is the youngest volunteer, she is also a supervisor. Additionally, Leanne is a catechesis teacher for sixth-eighth grade students and meets with them weekly and is also a student youth leader who creates fun monthly events for the parish community.

Senior Ava Downey has been a teacher aide in the Sunday School program for six years at St. Simon’s. She started in the preschool program and is now helping second graders in their First Communion class.

Senior Frida Ortiz was nominated by St. Lucy’s for her service as an assistant to the Children’s Catechetical Director, a teacher’s assistant for catechism in English and Spanish, an altar server and a volunteer with Vacation Bible Camp and Camp Thrive.

Junior Rachel Perez has served at St. Simon’s as an altar server, choir member, counselor for vacation Bible school and now a catechist-in-training where she teaches weekly Sunday School.
