The Varsity girls Cross Country team set five personal bests today in their WCAL opening race at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale. Emily Skahill finished 3rd overall(19:17), Melissa Seaman 19:31 7th overall, Carla Cornillon (19:41-9th), Gia Kim-19:42-10th) and Julia Bounds 19:46-11th). Despite their efforts they finished 2nd overall just two points behind the Mitty Monarchs. It is difficult to lose when your top five runners finish in the top 11 places in the race, but we let one runner get between us and that was all it took.
The JV race was won by Emily McConnell(21:25-1st) and she was closely followed by her teammate, Sophia Smith in 2nd (21:32). Cece Hinz(22:33) and Christine Nguyen(22:33), also finished in the top 10 and Alana Drumm (23:25-17th) to lead their team to the championship. After the 2 mile mark, McConnell and Smith took control of the race and opened up their lead in the last 1000 meters on their own.
Freshman, Jackie Miley started the day's competition with a commanding lead and control of the frosh-soph race. She took control from the start and never relinquished it. She only increased it after the mile mark. Her time of 20:37 would have placed her in the top 20 in the Varsity race. Her reammate, Haley Torsney(20:56) controlled 2nd place throughout the race as well. Carly Trent (21:54), Sophia Morris (22:29) and Lauren Livingood (22:43) all finished in the top seven places to dominate the race.
Congrats to all the runners and their efforts on this course. It was a very rewarding day for the Lancers.
