iPad Program

The 2023-2024 school year be the 12th year of our 1:1 iPad program.

Some points of note for the 2023-2024 school year:

  • The Freshman Class of 2027 will be issued their device at a Welcome Event on June 4th 2023 (TBC). All other incoming students will receive their device as part of orientation in August 2023.
  • The cost of repairing an iPad with cracked glass is $149.
  • Freshmen & Sophomores: a replacement 9th generation iPad is $330. A replacement case is $140.
  • Juniors: a replacement 8th generation iPad is $350. A replacement case is $140.
  • Seniors: a replacement 6th generation iPad is $200. A keyboard is $50.

Issued iPads

iPads have been updated to the latest version of iPadOS and enrolled in our JAMF management system.

  • Student email accounts have been set up and are ready for use.

  • iPads have been signed in and set up to backup to the student’s school iCloud account which contains 200GB of backup space.

  • The school’s preferred app for notes is "Notability", which has been installed on the iPad and configured to automatically backup to Google Drive.

  • The "Schoology" app is installed and the student has been logged in.

  • All other apps a student will need are available at no cost from the Self Service app installed on every iPad.

Cases, Chargers & Cables

  • Only cases approved by Saint Francis are allowed.

  • If the student does not want to use the provided keyboard and cover they can buy a traditional iPad case from Lancer Locker. These alternative cases will be available at the beginning of the school year for $30 each.

  • Every incoming student will be issued a new charger and cables (one for the iPad, another for the keyboard) that they will keep all the time they are a student. We do not supply replacements for lost, damaged or failed chargers or cables.

Apple ID

Saint Francis provides an Apple ID connected to the student's school email account for iCloud backup storage only. Students need a second Apple ID linked to a credit card to purchase books from Apple's iBooks store. If students do not already have an Apple ID linked to a credit card, they need to create one (https://appleid.apple.com) and confirm that it is functional.

iPad Insurance

We offer optional third-party iPad insurance and encourage each family to actively consider buying it to cover iPad loss or damage.

Reminders

  • Ownership: The school owns the device. The iPads are loaned to students while they are enrolled at the school. Families are responsible for any damage or loss of the device.

  • Monitoring Software: The iPads are monitored by the school via a management software tool which tracks both iPad usage and apps loaded on the devices. Any unauthorized use of the iPad will result in disciplinary action.

  • Internet Access: Students have filtered Internet access at school. The filter prohibits students from visiting social networking and inappropriate websites. We encourage parents to monitor/restrict their student’s Internet access at home.

  • Apps: Only school-approved apps can be downloaded on the iPad through the Self Service app that is automatically installed on their iPads. Students do not have access to Apple’s App Store.

  • Backing up data: Students are 100% responsible for backing up their notes and other iPad data. The iPad has already been set up to use iCloud to backup data using the school provided Apple ID and Google Drive to backup Notability notes.

  • Personal Laptops: The school-issued iPad is the only device that is to be used at school during the school day, with the exception that students enrolled in Programming and AP Programming classes may use a personal laptop while in those classes only.

  • eBooks: Saint Francis uses a blend of print and digital texts. We use ebooks offered from our textbook partner MBS, as well as from Apple's Books app.

    • For English classes, students will be permitted to use ebooks as long as they are the same edition required by the class. There are several e-readers available on student iPads, including Kindle, for students to access their e-books.

    • Textbook lists will be available online in July. All registration forms, the deposit and July tuition payment must be received before your booklist will be released.

The full set of technology and iPad expectations can be found in the Acceptable Use Policy articulated in the Student-Parent Handbook.
