Summer at Saint Francis High School is excited to offer rising grade 10-11 students the opportunity to complete the Geometry or Trigonometry requirement for academic advancement. Students currently in Algebra 1 can enroll in our summer Geometry course, while those in Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 Honors can take our Trigonometry course.

Course Specific Details

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a one semester course and students need only enroll in a single term.

You must make the determination to take the online Edgenuity class before the term begins. There is no option to switch to online once you start the in-person class.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Students must be currently enrolled at Saint Francis High School.

  • Algebra 2 students with an “A-” or better and Algebra 2 Honors students with a “B” or better are eligible to take the Summer Trigonometry class.

  • Summer Trigonometry is recommended, but not required for students with an “A” in Algebra 2 Honors.

  • Grades will be verified at the end of semester to ensure that you finish the second semester with the letter mark "A-" to meet this requirement.

  • If you don't not finish the spring semester of Algebra 2 with a solid "A-", you will be removed from the Trigonometry summer course and refunded the price of the class, minus the nonrefundable deposit of 10%.

  • If you didn't get an A- in the 1st semester and hope to take Summer Trigonometry, you should have submitted an Appeal form to the Math Department chair.
Prerequisites for AP Precalculus and Physics Honors in Summer Trigonometry
  • Students should attend all of the class sessions. There is one unexcused absence allowed.

  • Students are required to be present for the final exam on the last day of the Term.

  • For online Trigonometry, students are required to attend an in person proctored final on the final date of the course and get at least a 60% on the final exam.

  • We recommend students with a B+ or better in Summer Trigonometry to advance to AP Precalculus.

  • We recommend students with a B or higher to advance to Physics Honors.

  • Students who earn a B+ can also take the class, but should be aware that Students who scored a B+ last summer piloted PreCalc Honors in 2023-24. Going into the semester final, the B+ summer students had a B- average in the PCH class with grades ranging from B+ to C-.

  • Students who earn a B+ in the summer class should give a lot of thought to how much time and effort they can put into AP Precalculus during the school year.
Option to switch to Enrichment
  • Students who score a B+ or lower can request to have the course marked as "enrichment" and will be placed into Precalculus the upcoming school year. Grades will remain for "credit" if you do not opt to switch to enrichment.

  • If you want to maintain the class "for credit" even though you won't advance to AP Precalculus with a B or less, here is a recommendation from our counselor:

"I would recommend that you maintain the course for "credit" so it shows on your transcript regardless of the grade. It shows colleges that you were in fact doing academic work over the summer to advance your skills which not every student does. I encourage you to not get caught up on the actual grade but realize that you are better off than their peers that didn't take the course."

  • Deadline to switch to enrichment is the day before the course ends. Please email the summer office to request a switch.

Geometry

The Summer Geometry course follows the scope and sequence of the full year Geometry course at Saint Francis High School. When taking Geometry to  “jump” , a student needs to enroll in Term 1 and Term 2.

Geometry Eligibility Requirements
  • Students must be currently enrolled at Saint Francis High School.

  • Students with a grade of B or higher are most likely to be successful keeping up with the rigorous summer Geometry pacing.

  • The Math Department strongly recommends that students with a grade lower than a B take a full year of Geometry during the school year, rather than summer Geometry.

  • Students are required to have received a  C or better in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1-Honors.

  • Students are required to have received a C or better in Biology or Biology Honors.

  • There will not be time for algebra skill review. Students will be responsible for knowing the required algebra skills to be successful.
Prerequisites for Algebra 2, 2H, and Chemistry in Summer Geometry
  • Students must enroll in Term 1 and Term 2 in order to advance.  Because this is a full-year course, both semesters of the course are required.

  • Students are required to be present for the final exam on the last day of the Term.

  • Online Geometry is only an option for Saint Francis students upon approval through an appeal process.

  • We recommend students with a C- or above advance to Algebra 2 and Chemistry.

  • There is a "no retake" policy for tests and quizzes administered throughout the course.

  • Students who pass the course with a C- or above will be placed in Algebra 2 for the upcoming school year.

  • Students will advance to Algebra 2H with a minimum of a “A-” in Summer Geometry. There is no avenue to qualify for Advanced Algebra 2 / Trig Honors through the summer Geometry program. This applies to rising grade 9 students as well as other Saint Francis Students.

  • Students who score a D+ or lower will be placed in Geometry the upcoming school year.

  • We will convey your placement in Algebra 2 or 2H to our scheduler at the end of the Summer semester. You do not need to submit a course change request.
In Person Geometry Requirement
  • Geometry needs to be taken in person, at SFHS or at another school that has a UC/CSU approved summer Geometry course.

  • In person courses at another school need to be approved by the Math Department Chair.

  • This course operates on an accelerated timeline, as compared to a full-year course.

  • Students are successful in learning and retaining Geometry material when taking the course in person because of the synchronicity and the expert educator in the room.

  • If a student has a conflict in schedule, there is an appeal process. Print and complete this form, then the Summer High School Principal and the Math Department Chair will determine if you are eligible to take the online version.

  • Students are required to take a proctored final for both in person and online Geometry. The online version of Geometry will have a proctored final that is worth 30% of your grade. The in person Geometry final is worth 15% of your grade.

  • If you are eligible for the online option, you should take this with Imagine Edgenuity through Summer at Saint Francis. Other online providers need to be approved by the Math Department Chair.

  • For online Geometry, students are required to attend an in person proctored final on the final date of the course and get at least a 60% on the final exam.

  • For rising 9th graders, you will only receive a Summer at Saint Francis transcript. This will not apply to the 4-year Saint Francis high school transcript.
Option to switch to Enrichment
  • Students who earn a C-, C, or C+ in Summer Geometry can advance to Algebra 2, but should be aware that Algebra 2 preparation isn't covered in the summer, just Geometry. We recommend students with a C-, C, or C+ strongly consider the workload and difficulty of Algebra 2 without as much preparation from a full year Geometry course including Algebra 2 prep.

  • Option for SFHS Geometry students - Students who score a C+ or lower in Summer Geometry can request to have the course marked as "enrichment" and will be placed into Geometry the upcoming school year.

  • If you switch to enrichment it will be like auditing the class. You will still receive a grade, and it will show in your course history, but it will not show on your SFHS transcript or factor into your GPA. Also, if you switch to enrichment, you will not be eligible to skip to Algebra 2.

  • Deadline to switch to enrichment is the last day of 1st semester Geometry in the summer.

If I take the online Trigonometry/Geometry course, will I have to attend a proctored final?

Yes, we require a proctored in person final exam if you take the online course with any approved online provider. The final exam will count as 30% of your grade, and you must pass with a 60% or above on the final. Imagine Edgenuity is currently the only option we provide through Summer at Saint Francis for online courses in math.

I am not available for the in-person proctored final because I am traveling. Can I still take Trigonometry this summer?

The proctored in person final is required for any approved online course to get credit for the Trigonometry course. Students must get a 60% or above on the proctored online final to be eligible for AP Precalculus.

  • Option 1: Register for the Waitlist. You proceed just as if you were purchasing the class. There is no charge for enrolling on the waitlist.

  • Option 2: Complete the course in person at another school. Not all outside schools cover the material that our Math Department requires. You need to research an alternative that is UC/CSU approved and has an in person proctored final. You must get approval from the Math Department Chair to be eligible for credit. Transcripts are due to the Academics Office no later than August 1.

  • Option 3: Appeal to take the class online with Imagine Edgenuity. Request an appeal form from the Summer High School Principal, Rachel Safier, that needs to be signed by your current math teacher,  the math department chair (Evan Pasion), your guardian, and your counselor. Appeals will be considered on a case by case basis.
